Joel Nelson | MN
Where do you hail from: I grew up on a farm south of Cannon Falls, MN. While we had plenty of rivers to catch chubs and suckers in, my Grandpa would take my brothers and I over to Faribault and New Prague to fish pan fish. That’s where all of my cousins and I learned to fish.
Industry associations: Writer, Pro-staff Director Otter Outdoors, Social Media Director, Pro-staff member for many companies in the industry.
Preferred fishing and/or target species: Ice Fishing Big Gills!
Where do you like to fish: Away from everyone else, no matter where it is. When I’m fishing seriously, I’d rather try to find my own bite and fail, then fish amongst the rest.
Tips for catching your favorite species: Sonar can teach so much more than just how to catch an individual fish. Pair underwater camera footage with a flasher to see how and why fish approach. Identify what that looks like on sonar. Targets grow larger, dissipate, rush the bait, back off. All of the minor movements you see on camera translate to real-time effect on your sonar. Learn what those are, and you’ll know the species, and how to attract them long before you ever set the hook.
Memorable story or experience: I’ve been through the ice on 2 different occasions, neither of which are fun to recall. It’s one of the reasons I’m a Striker Ice customer myself.
How you measure success: Hard work and happiness. Many before me have so graciously shared that which I’ve learned and have come to know. Paying that forward and giving back is what spurs the hard work, drive, and passion in me to do what I do. If I’m not happy doing it, I leave it behind.
Why team up with Striker Ice: I’ve been through the ice on 2 different occasions, neither of which are fun to recall. It’s just one of the reasons I’m a Striker Ice customer. As for products, I’m a big fan of the predator suit. My motor runs a bit warm the way it is, so it’s always been more than enough to keep me comfortable on ice.
